The Russian population's general social well being is down in comparison to previous years
A study by the National Public Opinion Study Center (VTsIOM) indicates that the Russian population's general social well being is down in comparison to previous years. VTsIOM polls were held monthly throughout 2004 in 100 populated places in 39 regions and republics. Each time about 1,600 people were polled and the statistical error was 3.4 percent. 1523 respondents were polled on January 22-23, 2005. A growth tendency in Russians' adaptability to changes surfaced for the first time since last May. In comparison with December, the number of those thinking they have adapted to changes was cut in January from 65 to 57% and those thinking they "will never adapt" increased from 16 to 22%. It is the highest indicator in the last 1.5 years. In the last two months, self-assessment of material status fell to a late-2003 level. Thus, the level of those satisfied with their material status, which fluctuated between 32% in February and 42% in November 2004, constituted only 31% in January 2005. The level of satisfaction with life in general, which was between 24% in May and 35% in August 2004, constituted 26 percent in January. Currently, seven percent of the Russians think the national state of affairs is good, 48% said it is average and 40% called it bad. Dynamics from last December are below one percent
