Federal troops and law enforcement bodies have prevented several major terrorist acts against civilians in Chechnya
Federal troops and law enforcement bodies have prevented several major terrorist acts against civilians in Chechnya, reports the press center of the Regional Operational Headquarters for the Counter-terrorist Operation in the North Caucasus. "Federal troops discovered two improvised explosive devices in a reinforced concrete drainpipe lying under the road while conducting engineer reconnaissance in the village of Chiri Yurt in the Shali district," said the center. One bomb was made of a mine and a grenade, the other was made of a grenade that was put into a plastic bottle and filled with more than 500 grams of plastic explosives and outfitted with an electric detonator. "Intelligence suggests the bombs were made by Akhmed Yunusov's gang that is connected to [Chechen separatist leader] Shamil Basayev. They planned a terrorist act against civilians ahead of Fatherland Defenders' Day in Russia," said the center. The explosives were planted near a residential area and a crossroads where traffic is usually rather heavy. Experts believe the blast could kill and injure tens of people given the power of the explosive devices and their damage effect (reinforced concrete drainpipe fragments). While checking operative information, police have found an improvised bomb made of TNT and plastic explosives and fitted out with an electric detonator, which weighed 1.1 kilograms, in Grozny
