The second in history visit of Russia's president to Slovakia will take place on February 24-25
The second in history visit of Russia's president to Slovakia will take place on February 24-25. The first visit at this level was paid in 1993. As Russian President's aide Sergei Prikhodko told journalists, three themes will dominate the talks with president Ivan Gasparovic of Slovakia and other leaders of that country. "They are the preparation for celebrating the 60th anniversary of the victory over Nazism, bilateral cooperation, and the further development of relations with Slovakia with due account for its recent entry into the EU and NATO," the President's aide said. He recalled that the president of Slovakia would participate in the May 9 celebration in Moscow. "The 60th anniversary of the Slovak national rebellion was marked on a large scale in August 2004, and of the Carpathian-Dukla operation - last October. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will take part in the activities to mark the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Bratislava on April 4 this year," Mr. Prikhodko noted. As the Kremlin representative said, during his visit Vladimir Putin will lay a wreath at the memorial of the Soviet soldiers-liberators on Slavin Hill and together with Ivan Gasparovic will meet with the veterans of the Slovak liberation movement. "Moscow is grateful that Slovakian people look after the monuments and graves of more than 60,000 Soviet soldiers," Mr. Prikhodko said. "The study of the Russian language was wide-spread in Slovakia under socialism, and they praise the cultural heritage of bilateral relations," the president's aide noted. He went on to say that in Bratislava they had recently decided to buy Russian language handbooks to a sum of approximately $200,000. "During the visit the sides will discuss how to fit our common striving for development of bilateral cooperation into the new realities considering Slovakia's entry into the EU," Pr. Prikhodko said. The program of Vladimir Putin's official visit to Slovakia will begin in the afternoon on Thursday, after the talks with George Bush
