NEC Corporation launched sales of its mobiles in Russia
NEC Corporation, a major Japanese electronic manufacturer and a cell phone pioneer, launched sales of its mobiles in Russia. The company is going to occupy a 4-5% niche on the Russian market in the coming several years, NEC's General Manager Hiromi Orikasa said in his interview with the Vedomosti daily. Mr. Orikasa attributes the dearth of Japanese brands in Russia to political difficulties caused by the lack of transparency of the Russian market. However, the company decided to launch operations in the country because the European GSM communications market has been saturated. In the coming three to four years, the global market of 3rd-generation cell phones capable of high-speed data transmission is to surge, Mr. Orikasa opined, with 3G networks to spring up in Russia in another couple of years. NEC covers the upper and medium price segments. Developing mobiles, the company applies its key technologies but adds functions based on local preferences. For instance, the company develops and tests its European-bound cell phones in the UK. It has no similar division in Russia so far, but the general manager would not rule out one appearing in three or four years and enabling the Japanese to get a better grasp of the tastes of Russian customers. NEC is a manufacturer of semiconductors and household electronics and high-tech products. In the fiscal year that expired on March 31, 2004, its sales grew up to $47.9 billion and its profit equaled about $400 million against the $240-million losses a year before. NEC is not on the Top 5 cell phone maker list but is among the leaders in the 3G field.
