The US and Australia have voiced dismay at the 30-month sentence imposed on radical Indonesian cleric Abu Bakar Ba'asyir for the 2002 Bali bombings
Ba'asyir was found guilty of conspiracy over the attacks, in which 202 people died. He had denied the charges. Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said the cleric's conviction was "satisfying", but it was disappointing that the sentence was so short. A US diplomat said it was disappointing "given the gravity of the charges". A court in Jakarta cleared the 66-year-old cleric of more serious charges, including ordering the Bali attacks. Judges also found him not guilty of involvement in a bomb attack on the Marriott hotel in Jakarta in 2003, in which 12 people were killed. At the end of the court case, a statement read out by the five judges said Ba'asyir had not been directly involved in carrying out the Bali blasts, but had given his approval for the attacks, reports ABC News. According to the Conservative Voice, in a decision that angered both Australia and the United States, terrorist Islamic cleric Abu Bakar Bashir received a sentence of only 2 + years for conspiracy in the 2002 Bali bombing. Taking into account the time he has already served in an Indonesian prison, Bashir could be released as early as October 2006. After the verdict was handed down, Bashir made the statements: ?I'm being oppressed by people from abroad and at home. They consider Islamic law to be a shackle and are slaves to immoral behavior. Allah, open their hearts or destroy them!"
