Members of the Russian State Duma believe that it will be easier to fight terrorism after Maskhadov's death
Maskhadov's death will turn the tide in fighting Caucasian terrorism, Deputy State Duma Speaker Vladimir Zhirinovsky, who also heads the Liberal-Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR), stressed. Zhirinovsky made this revelation, while addressing the lower parliament house's plenary session here today. The liquidation of Maskhadov shows that the military phase of the Chechen counter-terrorist operation is nearing completion, Alexei Mitrofanov, member of the lower parliament house's LDPR faction, noted. The pacification of Chechnya is a highly important political task at this stage, Mitrofanov went on to say. Russian secret services have now accomplished what they should have done many years ago, Deputy State Duma Speaker Sergei Baburin said. At the same time, Baburin believes that separatist leaders and bandits must be captured alive, so that they could testify against their patrons. Moreover, this would make it possible to punish them for their crimes.
