Russian President Vladimir Putin has visited the State Academic Bolshoi Theater
Russian President Vladimir Putin has visited the State Academic Bolshoi Theater which will be reconstructed soon. Theater's general director Anatoly Iksanov told the head of state about the condition of the building, in particular, the necessity to fasten the foundation. Mr. Putin inspected the orchestra pit and the unique belfry created in the 1920s. It contains 27 old bells which diameter varies from 3 meters to 20 centimeters. Chief director of the Bolshoi Theater Alexander Vedernikov spoke about the acoustic problems. According to him, "a key task is to restore the former acoustics of the hall which was damaged after the foundation's fastening." The President also attended rehearsal halls. Ballet dancer Nikolai Tsiskaridze said that the reconstruction should be completed as soon as possible. He is willing to dance on the famous stage again. According to Vladimir Putin, the reconstruction will be over in 2008. "This is great," the dancer said. "I came here today to boost the restoration," the head of state explained. The President took part in the session on the reconstruction of the two central theaters of the Russian Federation, the Bolshoi Theater (Moscow) and Mariinsky Theater (St. Petersburg). Above all, it is necessary to work out realistic reconstruction plans and follow the schedule of the works. Casting a quick glance upon the Bolshoi Theater, everyone understands that it is high time to restore it, Mr. Putin stressed. "The second stage has been opened. But much more progress could have been achieved," he said. "The situation in the Mariinsky Theater is worse. Much work is to be done there," the President noted. Those attending the session were Finance Minister Alexei Kudrin, Culture and Mass Communication Minister Alexander Sokolov, head of the federal agency for culture and cinematography Mikhail Shvydkoi, artistic director of the Mariinsky Theater Valery Gergiyev and heads of the Bolshoi Theater Anatoly Iksanov and Alexander Vedernikov
