Chief of the General Staff of Russia's Armed Forces will pay working visits to the PRC and South Korea
Chief of the General Staff of Russia's Armed Forces Yuri Baluyevsky will pay working visits to the PRC and South Korea, the Defense Ministry of Russia reported. According to the agency's interlocutor, in the course of the trip which is beginning on Wednesday it is planned to discuss the questions of military and military-technical cooperation and international security. The working trip will last till March 22. As the source said, during his trip to Beijing Mr. Baluyevsky will discuss the course of the preparation for the first ever Russian-Chinese military exercise. The sides plan, in particular, to finally agree upon the time of the maneuvers, their plan, and the composition of the attracted forces and means. Presumably, these maneuvers will be held in fall 2005 in China on the Shandong Peninsula and in the water area of the Yellow Sea washing it. Participation of a company of airborne troops, long-range aviation and front-line aviation fighters, as well as of Marines subunits and a detachment of Pacific Fleet ships is planned from the Russian side. "In the course of the maneuvers it is planned to practice a joint peacekeeping operation of the mobile forces of Russia and the PRC. The exercise will also have an anti-terrorist orientation," the agency's interlocutor said. Meetings with China's top military commanders are planned in the program of Mr. Baluyevsky's visit. On March 20 Mr. Baluyevsky will fly from Beijing to Seoul where he will have meetings with Defense Minister of the Republic of Korea Yuun Kwang Woong and joint chiefs of staffs chairman Kim Jong Hwan before March 22. As it is expected, along with the questions of military and military-technical cooperation, the DPRK's nuclear program and the situation on the Korean Peninsula as a whole will become a separate theme of the talks in Seoul
