The 25th Annual Paris Book Fair opens this Friday at an exhibition center in the French capital's south
Russia, for the first time, is an honorary and professional guest at the fair, which, according to its organizers, is meant both for professionals and the public. Every year about 180,000 people visit it. The Russian exhibition, designed in the style of a birch grove after the sketches of theater artist Pavel Kaplevich, occupies the central part of the fair. About 80 Russian publishing houses will be presenting their products. Well-known writers, including Vasily Aksyonov, Viktor Yerofeyev, Svetlana Aleksiyevich, Lyudmila Ulitskaya, Yevgeny Grishkovets and Alexandra Marinina, have already arrived in Paris to take part in the fair. They will present their works to the French public and take part in literary debates and round-table conferences. Organizers noted that young Russian authors, who have already been noticed by critics and are becoming popular among readers, have also been invited to Paris. Russian participants in the fair will organize seven thematic exhibitions, including "France in Russian Publications," "Book Illustrations" and "French Books from Russian Archives." Visitors to the fair's Russian section will have a chance to get acquainted with anthologies of modern Russian prose and poetry that have been published specially for the Paris fair. The cultural program prepared by the Russian exhibition organizers will include films, contests for the knowledge of the Russian language and literature, and other events. The Russian theme will also be found throughout the rest of the exhibition. Fourteen French publishers will present more than a dozen books by Russian authors recently released, including works by Boris Akunin, Andrei Bitov, Viktor Pelevin, Dmitry Prigov and others. The fair's organizers promised to present new biographical and historical books by French authors also devoted to the Russian theme.
