Valentina Matvienko and Franco Frattini discussed perspectives for creating an Italian industrial park in Saint Petersburg
SAINT PETERSBURG, February 9. Saint Petersburg Governor Valentina Matvienko and Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini discussed perspectives for creating an Italian industrial park in Saint Petersburg. The governor's press service told that the total trade turnover between Saint Petersburg and Italy reached USD 225 million last year. Matvienko said that was too low. Direct investment is also low running at USD 6.3 million. According to these figures, Italy is not even one of Saint Petersburg's 10 largest trading partners. Frattini agreed that Saint Petersburg has everything today necessary for attracting more Italian companies. He said in 2004 the Italian Institute for Investment Abroad would receive USD 60 million for developing programs of economic cooperation with Russia. Culture, science and education were the most three successful areas of cooperation between Italy and Saint Petersburg this past year. Moreover, Italy took an active role in the city's 300th anniversary. Moreover, student exchange programs between the two countries are now being formulated. Students from Saint Petersburg universities and institutes will be given a special place in the programs. Finally, the Italian government is preparing to make a special decision in regards to simplifying visa requirements for students of Russian institutes of higher learning.
