Viktor Yushchenko and Saparmurat Niyazov are scheduled to discuss energy cooperation
Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko and Turkmen President Saparmurat Niyazov are scheduled to discuss energy cooperation during Yushchenko's official visit to Ashkhabad on March 22-23, according to the Ukrainian presidential press service. "The question of Ukraine's participation in energy projects will dominate the meeting of the two countries' presidents," a press service spokesman said. Also on the table for discussion is the supply of Turkmen gas to Ukraine. The two sides also plan to sign a number of documents and a joint statement during the visit. "This year Turkmenistan is supplying gas to Ukraine at a price of $58 per 1,000 cu m as compared to $44 last year. Yushchenko earlier stated that he intends to address the question of using Ukrainian transit capacities for transporting energy carriers from Turkmenistan to the Western European countries. In 2002, Niyazov offered Ukraine the chance to participate in the construction of the 1,500-kilometer-long Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan gas pipeline - a project estimated at $2 billion. Ukraine was to provide specialists and equipment for the project. In 2003, Niyazov asked Ukraine to join the construction of the Caspian gas pipeline with a length of more than 1,000 km. The construction cost of the pipeline, with a capacity to carry 30 billion cu m of gas a year, was estimated at $1 billion. Ukraine was to build a 780-kilometer-long section of the pipeline. It is planned that the president of Ukraine will participate in the traditional celebration of the advent of spring - Navruz (in Iran whence the holiday of spring equinox spread all over the Near East and not only there Nouruz - it sounds so in the Persian language - signifies also the beginning of New Year - the 1384th according to the solar calendar adopted in the country).
