An exposition featuring showpieces from the State Fine Arts Museum of the Republic of Tatarstan opens in the State Tretyakov Gallery
It is dedicated to the 1000th anniversary of Kazan, Tatarstan's capital. At the same time the Kazan museum will host an exhibition of the Russian paintings of the 18th-20th centuries from the collection of the Tretyakov Gallery. The exposition in the Tretyakov Gallery features works by the 18th century's painters, including outstanding portraitist Dmitry Levitsky. There are many landscape paintings among the showpieces. The museum boasts a rich collection of Ivan Shishkin's works. The famous painter was born in Yelabuga, which is situated not far from Kazan. Group portraits of the 19th century are also of interest. This genre is not typical of the Russian art. The section dedicated to the late 19th - early 20th centuries includes works by Jack of Diamonds artists. Among them is "An Airplane above a Train", a futurist masterpiece by Natalia Goncharova, remarkable paintings by impressionist Georgy Lapshin and Nikolai Sinezubov, a popular artist of the beginning of the 20th century (his personal exhibition took place in the State Tretyakov Gallery in 1922). Works by Tatar artists Nikolai Feshin (1881-1955) and Baki Urmanche (1897-1990) are the highlight of the exposition. The former was little known in Russia till recently. Feshin left Kazan in 1923 and lived in the United States where the greater part of his heritage is kept. Paintings, graphic works and sculptures, which he created before the emigration, remained in Kazan. In total, there are 160 Feshin's works. Baki Urmanche is the founding father of Tatarstan's professional art. He received special artistic training and worked in many genres - paintings, graphics, sculpture, monumental arts, book design, calligraphy. One of his best works is the painting "At the Separator" (1927). The exhibition will be running from March 31 till May 9.
