The authorities of Volgograd do not intend to rename the city back into Stalingrad
Volgograd Mayor Yevgeny Ishchenko said it at a press conference in Moscow on Thursday. "We shall forward the initiative of renaming our city back into Stalingrad if the majority of Volgograd's population back this idea," he said. According to a sociological survey conducted in Volgograd in March, only 15% of the population support the renaming and two-thirds of residents do not want to change anything, Ishchenko noted. "However, we should play tribute to the past. We intend to rename Lenin Avenue into Stalingrad Avenue and Communist Street into Victory Street," the mayor reported. In his words, the idea to rename the city occurred a long time ago and is supported by the elderly people. "This idea emerges ahead of some important events, for instance, the 60th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War," Yevgeny Ishchenko said.
