Yevgeny Primakov will begin his visit to China today
Yevgeny Primakov, the honorary chairman of the Russia-China Committee of Friendship, Peace and Development, will begin his visit to China today. According to the Russian Embassy, he will meet with his Chinese counterpart, Qian Qichen, the ex-foreign minister, and co-chairman Li Guixian on April 1 to discuss the committee's activities, Russo-Chinese cooperation and the international situation. On Saturday, Primakov will deliver a lecture at Beijing's Diplomatic Institute and end his visit on Sunday, April 3. The agreement on the establishment of the Committee was signed in November 1997. The Russian chairman is Leonid Drachevsky, and the Chinese, Li Guixian, deputy chairman of the National Committee of the People's Political Consultative Council of China. Under the agreement, honorary chairmen are to be elected among "statesmen who made an especially big contribution to the strengthening of Russia-China friendship." The two sides announced that the Committee of the 21st Century, as it is sometimes called, is a public organization of a new type designed to consolidate the social basis for Russia-China strategic partnership. The Committee has several subcommittees on assistance to friendly exchanges between regions; on humanitarian exchanges; on youth; on assistance to enterprise and business cooperation; on scientific exchanges; on women; and on prominent figures. In May 2004, Leonid Drachevsky and Li Guixian decided at their talks to create a Russia-China Business Cooperation Council
