For the moment, over 313,000 HIV-patients have been registered in Russia
This is the information that Russia's chief physician Gennady Onishchenko cited at a conference, Emergency Measures in Response to the HIV/AIDS pandemic in the CIS." According to him, the overwhelming majority of HIV-patients in Russia are young people aged 17-23. "There is positive dynamics but it is not reassuring," stressed Onishchenko. He also said that an alarming trend was AIDS feminization. According to Onishchenko, women make up 30-50% of HIV-patients. Onishchenko noted that the major task was to make treatment affordable, as the law stipulates free treatment. "15,000 people need such treatment today. By the end of the year, their number is likely to double," said Onishchenko. He also pointed out such an important issue as the children of HIV-infected parents. According to him, 9,000 little children forsaken by their mothers are staying at medical institutions. "They cannot be passed over to orphanages, and their adoption is virtually unrealistic," said Onishchenko.
