Vladimir Putin is to meet Emomali Rakhmonov in the Black Sea resort city of Sochi on Wednesda
Russian President Vladimir Putin is to meet Tajik President Emomali Rakhmonov in the Black Sea resort city of Sochi on Wednesday. The Tajik leader arrives at Sochi on a brief working visit, a RIA Novosti source in the Kremlin reported. According to the official, the talks will "review the multifaceted cooperation and implementation of the agreements made during the Russian president's official visit to Tajikistan on October 16, 2004." The official emphasized that the two presidents would touch upon "a further boost to the bilateral trade and economic cooperation." The trade is good now, the source stressed, with the annual turnover growth standing at about 30-44%. At the same time, special attention should be paid to power generation and aluminum production (UES of Russia and Russian Aluminum are Tajikistan's partners) that are the key-issues of the bilateral economic ties. Speaking of a CIS reform, the Kremlin official said: "Russia's and Tajikistan's positions are the same or close enough as far as reforming the Commonwealth of Independent States and cooperating as part of the Eurasian Economic Community are concerned." In addition, the talks also will dwell on the situation in Central Asia and cooperation within the framework of the integrationist associations operating there, including the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). The official underlined that the Tajik president's routine visit to Russia coincided with Exercise Rubezh 2005 conducted in Tajikistan by the Collective Rapid Deployment Force (CRDF) of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO). The exercise is focused on honing CRDF troops' counterterrorist skills in CSTO's area of responsibilities in Central Asia.
