The number of Internet users in Russia has reached 17.6 million in the past year
Izvestia reports that experts from the Public Opinion Foundation (POF) and RU-Center, which registers Internet domains, say rapid growth has been registered not only among ordinary users, but also in e-commerce. The research conducted by the two organizations showed that the number of Internet users in Russia went up by 3 million (a 20.5% increase) last year. According to RU-Center, 2004 saw a significant increase in registered domains. If in 2003 the national domain zone increased by 62,000 domains (from 152,000 to 214,000), in 2004 the ".ru" zone grew from 214,000 to 305,000 domains. Percentage-wise, the growth rate in 2003 was 40.79% and in 2004 - 42.52%. The registration rates in 2004 increased by the end of the year. In December, for instance, the ".ru" zone expanded by 9,500 domains. The researchers revealed that growth, both in relation to common users and domain owners, varied depending on the region. POF concluded that the majority of Internet users in Russia lived in the Volga Federal District (2.9 million people). The Central Federal District came in second with 2.7 million users, but users in Moscow (3.6 million) were not counted. According to RU-Center, the majority of domain owners (63.17%) are in the Central federal district. Most of domain owners are concentrated in Moscow - 79,466 or 47.9% of the total number. When commenting on the rapid growth of domain owners, experts point out that the reason for the current trend is not increased business activity, but that companies increasingly understand that they must have a Web site. Dmitry Sobolev, a marketing manager with Karavan, says many companies understand that the Internet is an indispensable communication channel and are transferring the bulk of their advertising from traditional channels to the Internet, creating promotional sites and non-commercial projects
