The Russian government is considering the possibility of converting the main national airport Sheremetyevo into an international transit facility
"It may be converted into a hub", Economic Development and Trade Minister German Gref said at a meeting on Wednesday with American businessmen, arranged by the American Chamber of Commerce in Russia. The government has not yet made up its mind - privatizing Sheremetyevo or passing it to private business for management, he said. "Sheremetyevo may be passed to be managed by a big international corporation with an experience in hub building and service", Gref said. The Economic Development and Trade Ministry and the Transport Ministry are unanimous that the airport has to be either privatized or turned to private management, Gref said. He also said that the state will take part in financing construction of the hub. Provided private investments are made in building the new terminal, the state will fund the building of runways. The accumulated American investments in the Russian economy come up to six billion dollars. "I'm glad that year on year American investments are increasing in all sectors - high technologies, the aviation and space industries" Gref said. Russia and the United States being far apart, America is Russia's fifth largest partner in trade, Gref said. To him, Russian-American foreign trade turnover increased by 37 percent over the past year
