Only 34% of Russians think their country is regarded positively in the world
The results of a Public Opinion Foundation survey conducted on April 2-3 show only 34% of Russians think their country is regarded positively in the world, whereas 46% think the general attitude is negative. The number of optimists fell from 51% in 2003 to 42% in 2004. Correspondingly, the number of pessimists grew from 33% to 43%. Only 7% of the respondents have been abroad in the last decade (not including the Baltic and CIS states), and 11% have visited the Baltic and CIS states alone. The respondents who have traveled abroad are more optimistic. Listed among the countries that have a negative opinion of Russia were the US (17%), the Baltic states (10%), and Ukraine and Georgia (4% each). One thousand five hundred respondents were interviewed in 100 settlements of 44 regions, and another 600 Moscow residents answered questionnaires. Statistical error does not exceed 3.6%.
