The international premiere of the "Cinemaphonia of the Seventh Symphony by Dmitry Shostakovich" will take place on May 9 in London and will be devoted to the 60th anniversary of the end of the Great Patriotic War. The Academic Symphony Orchestra of the Saint Petersburg Philharmonic Society, which will be directed by the composer's son Maxim Shostakovich, will give its concert in the Royal Albert Hall, one of the prestigious stages in Great Britain. It is RIA Novosti which has initiated this cultural event. The performance of the symphony will be accompanied by documentaries of the 1930s-1940s (director Georgy Paradzhanov. Still from these films, depicting mainly events of the military and blockade life, were arranged in such a way as to revive the images which guided the composer when he wrote his Seventh Symphony. The composer started to write his famous Seventh (Leningrad) Symphony in the city (now Saint Petersburg) which was blockaded by German troops at that time, and finished it during the evacuation to Kuibyshev (now Samara) in the summer and autumn of 1941. The first performance of the symphony took place in Leningrad in 1942 and demonstrated the strong spirit of the citizens of the city and of the whole country in the face of the enemy. The "Cinemaphonia," which is a unique combination of two types of art, music and cinematography, was shown in Petersburg last January when the city marked one more anniversary of lifting the blockade of Leningrad.
