Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet today with Jose Manuel Barroso who has come to Moscow for a one-day visit
Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet today with Jose Manuel Barroso, president of the European Commission, who has come to Moscow for a one-day visit. It is his first trip to Russia as the EC president. According to the EC press service, Barroso will discuss preparations for the May 10 Russia-EU summit in Moscow, including the drafting of roadmaps for the four common spaces created by Russia and the EU - economic, freedom, security and justice; external security; research and culture. Putin discussed progress in drafting the roadmaps at the Monday meeting with cabinet members. He demanded that the cabinet should prepare by May 10 a joint action plan for the creation of the common spaces, stressing that by that date the sides should outline joint actions for creating the spaces. Barroso will also discuss key issues of international relations. He said shortly before the visit that the EU and Russia had launched intensive dialogue on a wide range of issues that influence the life of our citizens. I am waiting for a meeting with President Putin, said the EC president, to decide together with him on the best way of advancing EU-Russia partnership, Barroso said. It will be a second meeting of Putin with the EU leaders in the past two weeks. On April 5, the president met in Sochi with Javier Solana, High Representative for the common foreign and security policy. The Russian president praised the development of Russia-EU relations. "I am pleased to say that EU-Russia relations are developing consistently," he said. "We find new points of contacts, quickly progressing in the drafting of documents for signing in Moscow on May 10."
