"Railway transport has always been and still remains a backbone of Russia's economics and defense power"
"Railway transport has always been and still remains a backbone of Russia's economics and defense power," OAO Russian Railways (RZD) President Gennady Fadeyev on Thursday said at the international scientific conference "Railway transport in the Great Patriotic War", adding that railroaders had made an invaluable contribution to the victory over Nazism. "During the Great Patriotic War railways handled over 20 million cars with equipment and personnel. The railway traffic merely during the Battle of Moscow amounted to over 300,000 cars," Fadeyev emphasized. According to Fadeyev, railways' veteran organizations number 46,000 war veterans, over 206,000 rear area workers, in total amounting to over 253,000 people. "To date seven Hero of the Soviet Union medal holders are in good health," said Fadeyev. The President of RZD has also noted that nowadays railways in CIS and Baltic States were still remaining a strong backbone of the economic development. Vladimir Rushailo, Russian Security Council Secretary has sent a complimentary letter to the conference specifying that over 401,000 railway employees were awarded medals during the Great Patriotic War. "It is essential to establish maximum passenger comfort for the Great Patriotic War veterans during their battlefield memorial visit," reads the complimentary letter
