A delegation of the 17th US Coast Guard District arrived at Kamchatka on Tuesday
A delegation of the 17th US Coast Guard District, headed by commander Rear Admiral James Olson, arrived at Kamchatka on Tuesday. The purpose of the visit is to discuss and sign documents on further cooperation with the North-Eastern border-guard directorate of the Coast Guard (SVPU BO) of the FSB of Russia. It is continuation of our joint work with the frontier coast guard of the north-east of Russia. Analogous cooperation is carried out with the coast guard services of the other neighbour countries, Mr. Olson told journalists. According to commander of the North-Eastern border-guard directorate of the Coast Guard of the FSB of the Russian Federation Lieutenant General Valery Putov, "such meetings and exercises make it possible to improve the professional training and at the same time show that we are at one in the questions of protection of biological resources." In the course of the visit it is planned to sum up the results of the joint actions and operations. The guests will visit the Kamchatka Communication and Monitoring Centre and will familiarize themselves with the Russian border-guards' armaments. The agreement on interaction in protecting the aquatic biological resources in the conventional region was concluded in 1996. At the end of the 1980s the situation which had arisen in the territorial waters and exclusive economic zone of the USSR and in the Pacific region pressed for active interaction of the USSR border-guard forces with the US Coast Guard. At the present time the two countries' border-guards patrol jointly and by turns, by the forces of the SVPU BO and the 17th US Coast Guard District, the conventional regions of the Bering Sea and the Northern Pacific and the delimitation line of the sea reaches of Russia and the USA, and hold joint exercises. They share with each other the experience of service, and exchange information on the catch situation and the craft-violators. As many as 35 operations at sea to stem the illegal catching and 15 search-rescue operations have been carried out over this period of time.
