The Black Sea fleet may receive another base near Novorossiisk
The Russian Navy's commander-in-chief Admiral Vladimir Kuroyedov told it RIA Novosti on Wednesday. "It is intended to establish two Black Sea fleet bases by 2017 on the Krasnodar territory's coast near Novorossiisk. Plans are in place to establish a base in Novorossiisk by 2011. And another coastal base is to appear there by 2017, Kuroyedov noted. "The construction of a new naval base does not mean that Russia is preparing to withdraw its fleet from Sevastopol," Kuroyedov stressed. "We mostly aim to expand the naval-base infrastructure on the Russian coast for the sake of enhancing Russia's national security along its southern perimeter," Kuroyedov said. "The construction of a naval base is very expensive," Kuroyedov stressed. According to Kuroyedov, a federal program stipulating construction of Novorossiisk bases is now being drafted. The program will receive budgetary appropriations.
