The Russian transport sector may contribute 1% of the country's GDP by 2008
German Gref, the Russian Economic Development and Trade Minister, said it at a Government session that discussed the national transport strategy until 2020. "Preliminary estimates show that, if implemented, this document can contribute greatly to the national GDP," Gref told his audience. "An infrastructure sector can make one of the greatest contributions," he added. In his words, the developing transport sector's influence on economic growth will, first of all, help expand domestic transport-system production. Moreover, this will facilitate greater transport-service demand. "Sectoral development will yield an indirect positive effect, reducing nationwide freight-transport expenses," Gref went on to say. In Gref's opinion, Russian airlines will provide additional transport services worth Euro 3-4 billion within the next five years.
