Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to the Palestinian autonomy is a key international event
Palestinian National Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas told it Kommersant. He called the visit an opportunity to redouble efforts for peace in the region and implement the Road Map plan since Russia is an important and influential member of the quadripartite commission on the Middle East. The quartet of international intermediaries also includes the United States, the UN and the European Union. "I am sure that after this visit, the activity of the four international intermediaries in implementing the quartet's responsibility will be intensified thanks to Russia's efforts," Abbas said. "He is resolved to advance the peace process and put an end to the torments of the Palestinian people, suffering from ongoing Israeli occupation." Another issue on the leaders' agenda is the development and strengthening of bilateral relations. Palestine relies on Russian assistance in various fields related to security, economics and culture. "In this aspect, we welcome the Russian government's assistance in the task of restoring our economy and participation by Russian companies in this effort, considering that thousands of Palestinian specialists have received education and training in Russian educational establishments," he said. Putin's visit confirms Russia's recognition of an independent Palestinian state, Abbas said.
