Some 1,200,000 Russians took to the streets for May Day rallies and demonstrations
The street rallies took place in 819 cities across the nation, ministry officials say. The highest turnout was registered in Russia's Federal District South, where as many as 384,600 people took part in the demonstrations; the lowest, in the Far East, with just above 95,000 participants in 45 cities. Yesterday's rallies were held amid tight security, with a total 94,600 police called in to prevent violence and anti-social behavior, spokespeople for the federal Interior Ministry report
