On Thursday, the Moscow Jewish community center will hold a presentation of the memorial Rescue Medal
The decoration has been instituted by Russia's Federation of Jewish Communities to mark the 60th anniversary of victory over Nazi Germany and to commemorate the saving of mankind from Nazi horrors, said Federation press-secretary Timur Kireyev. "The feat of the Soviet soldier in the Second World War deserves eternal gratitude, and we for our part found it impossible to stay aloof," emphasized Federation executive director Valery Engel. The Rescue Medal will be awarded during these pre-festive days to veterans and heads of veteran organizations, regardless of their nationality and faith. Besides, medals will be handed to activists of Jewish organizations and communities who have made a special contribution to perpetuating the memory of victory. All in all, the Moscow mint of Russia's Goznak has produced 63 Rescue Medals. In form the medal is shaped like David's star - a hexagram consisting of two isosceles triangles, which is a traditional symbol of Judaism. The medal has a diameter of 8 centimeters and is made from 925 sterling silver. Engraved on the obverse are the dates: "1945-2005". On the reverse runs an inscription "Remember" in Hebrew and Russian.
