A gala concert devoted to the 60th VE-Day anniversary will take place at the Chateau de Forges Russian-culture center near Paris
The "Frontline Music" program includes new versions of 26 songs, romances, opera-and-operetta arias that were recently found in Dmitry Shostakovich's archives. These masterpieces will be performed by Galina Vishnevskaya, soloist of the Opera Center, and scholarship holders of Mstislav Rostropovich's Foundation for supporting young musicians. The concert is organized on the initiative of both great musicians, who had performed on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. Both of them still recall those difficult times. Galina Vishnevskaya, who experienced all horrors of the Leningrad blockade, considers a medal "For the Defense of Leningrad" to be the most important of her numerous awards. The project's authors say that they did not choose Shotstakovich's versions of the afore-said music pieces by chance. "This musical material is incredibly interesting. Shostakovich especially adapted such pieces to cellos and violins because musicians leaving for the front could only take small instruments with them," Vishnevskaya noted. For his own part, Mstislav Rostropovich said that Shostakovich, who provided frontline performers with new music-piece versions of many genres wanted to make every soldier happy. According to Rostropovich, the "Frontline Music" project opens up another extremely profound page in the creative work of Shostakovich, who is probably the greatest 20th century composer. Apart from the concert, this event, which is organized with the support of the charitable reserve foundation, includes an exhibition of documents and personal effects from the "Generals of Victory" foundation's depositories and an exhibition of war correspondents' photos
