The South American countries are prepared to expand cooperation with Russia, specifically in the sphere of high technologies, chief of staff of the presidency of the South- American Common Market MERCOSUR Eduardo Amadeo stated. He gave an interview to RIA Novosti on the eve of the visit of a high-placed MERCOSUR delegation to Moscow. A meeting of the MERCOSUR delegation with representatives of the Russian leadership will be held in Moscow on Tuesday for the first time. The delegation is headed by chairman of the commission of permanent representatives of MERCOSUR Eduardo Duhalde, ex-president of Argentina. It includes also six high-ranking representatives from Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay. "At the talks with our Russian counterparts we plan to discuss the prospects of cooperation of Russia and MERCOSUR within the so-called initiative on integration of the regional infrastructure in the South-American region," Eduardo Amadeo said in the interview. According to him, to this today MERCOSUR has approved 32 projects in the spheres of high technologies, energy and transport, and an active search for potential investors is now under way. "Considering Russia's vast experience, we would like to offer Russian business to participate in the implementation of joint projects," the high-placed diplomat said. "In particular, Russia could take part in implementing joint projects in the energy sphere." The MERCOSUR countries are currently fulfilling a plan of integration of the energy sphere, including setting up of an integrated energy system and construction of high-voltage power transmission lines. "In the course of our visit to Russia we hope to familiarize ourselves in more detail with the Russian proposals on cooperation in the energy sphere, and to map out concrete ways to translate them into reality," the high-ranking MERCOSUR representative noted. He also said that the MERCOSUR delegation is being accompanied by 18 major entrepreneurs of South America representing the food industry, biotechnology, and the high technologies sphere. "As it seems to us, the sphere of high technologies has good prospects for development of cooperation between our countries, and we plan to discuss them at the meeting of entrepreneurs of Russia and MERCOSUR," Eduardo Amadeo pointed out. "We hope that in the course of our Moscow visit we will be able to reach a new level of cooperation between Russia and MERCOSUR," Amadeo concluded. The MERCOSUR delegation is expected to meet with Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov, chairman of Russia's Security Council Igor Ivanov, and Minister of Economic Development German Gref.
