Kyrgyzstan opened its border crossing point on the Kyrgyz-Uzbek border in the city of Kara-Suu on Wednesday
The local population crosses the border without hindrance. Uzbek nationals are let into Kyrgyzstan if they produce their passports featuring the Andizhan Region's registration permit and undergo examination. In the morning, there has been a mass rally in the city of Karasu on the Uzbek side of the border, with the protesters demanding unimpeded access across the border, denied to them by the Kyrgyz authorities early in the morning on Wednesday because of Uzbekistan's failure to furnish its own personnel on that stretch of the border. The day before, the Kyrgyz and Uzbek authorities agreed that the latter would have resumed border measures before 6 a.m. on Wednesday. However, servicemen have not showed up on the Uzbek side of the border yet. Still, Kyrgyzstan allowed access at that border crossing point. Crossing is exercised across the river on a footbridge the protesters in Karasu launched on May 14. The Uzbek city of Karasu (former Ilyichyovsk) borders Kyrgyzstan several dozen kilometers away from Andizhan. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the single city, Kara-Su, was divided into the Kyrgyz part, Kara-Suu, and the Uzbek one, Ilyichyovsk (now Karasu). The Kyrgyz authorities ordered its entire border with Uzbekistan closed on May 13 during the mass disturbances in the Andizhan Region of Uzbekistan. The Uzbek authorities followed suit. Nonetheless, over 500 Uzbek refugees managed to cross into Kyrgyzstan's Jalal-Abad Region and were given shelter in a temporary tent city
