Former Russian prime minister Mikhail Kasyanov called the trial of ex Yukos CEO Mikhail Khodorkovsky "a farce"
"It's a farce, a show of force and inadmissible actions by authorities," Kasyanov who now heads the MK Analitika consulting firm, told reporters on Thursday. "Today, we are unable to judge all the consequences which will have a long-term impact," he added. He said he sees "an active dismantling of democratic foundations of the Constitutional order" in the country at present. Russia is moving in the wrong direction, while quickening its pace in the negative direction. In his opinion, the latest negative points, aside from the Khodorkovsky trial, were the change in the election procedure for regional governors and the adoption of a new law on electing lawmakers to the lower house. Kasyanov said all the civic forces in such a situation should unite to create a counterbalance to the government's trying to restore the Soviet order. When asked about his readiness to lead these efforts, he said "all's possible."
