Indian President Abdul Kalam is to arrive in Russia on a state visit on Sunday
The official program of the visit will start on Monday, May 23, diplomatic sources in Moscow told RIA Novosti. Kalam is to meet with Russian top officials. On Monday the Indian leader is to visit the Sukhoi design bureau and the Russian Academy of Sciences. The title of the academy's honored professor will be conferred on Abdul Kalam. He is to meet with staffers of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Academy of Sciences and deliver a lecture to students of Moscow State University. On Tuesday the Indian President will attend the Mashinostroyeniye (mechanical engineering) scientific and production association producing Brahmos supersonic anti-ship cruise missiles designed by Russian and Indian specialists. On Wednesday Abdul Kalam will visit St. Petersburg. He is to attend the Indian hall at the State Hermitage and the Institute of Arctic and Antarctic. The Indian leader is expected to meet with St. Petersburg's governor Valentina Matviyenko. The Russian-Indian talks will focus on the whole range of bilateral relations, RIA Novosti's source said. "This is the first visit to Russia by an Indian President. Before that, the Indian President visited the Soviet Union. This fact points to the high level of our relations," the source emphasized. According to him, Russian-Indian scientific and military-technical cooperation will be on the agenda of Abdul Kalam's talks in Moscow.
