The population in Russia has dropped by 0.16 percent in the first quarter to close at 143.3 million by April 1, 2005
Birth rates in the first quarter dropped by 12,000 against the same period last year, while the overall death toll rose by 4,100. The natural decline of the population totaled 247, 200 against 231,100 last years. In the first quarter, the number of marriages has gone up to 203,000, while the number of divorced couples dropped by 17,400. Birth rates went down on seventy-one territories of the Russian Federation, while death rates went up in forty-six regions. The death rates exceed birth rates by 1. 7 percent in Russia in general, and in some regions the gap is almost 2- 3.1 percent, which is indicative of the declining population. Only fourteen regions have reported natural growth of the population in the first quarter. Migration rates within Russia have dropped by 10.2 percent in the first quarter against the same period last year. The population growth due to migration totalled 19,100 or 5.8 percent. The number of the population abandoning Russia to live elsewhere has dropped by 14.5 percent, including the CIS states, which reported a 15.5 percent decline in the number of immigrants from Russia. The migration growth has been reported from practically all the CIS countries, except Georgia and Turkmenistan, Prime Tass reported Tuesday.
