The presentation of the Russia exposition, to open in the Guggenheim Museum in mid-September, will be held in New York today
This largest ever exposition of Russian paintings and applied arts, organized with the assistance of the leading Russian museums, will be timed for the 60th anniversary of the UN. It will include over 300 exhibits from the Hermitage, the Tretyakov Gallery, the Russian Museum, the Moscow Kremlin, the Museum of Russian Art in Minneapolis, and other state and private collections of Russia and the US. The exposition will embrace the past 900 years in the history of Russian culture, from Old Russian icons to modern socialist art. A return exhibition, America, is to be held in Russia in 2006. "The goal of this major project is to present the image of both countries, their history, roots and traditions," said Mikhail Shvydkoi, head of the Federal Agency of Culture and Filmmaking. "The two exhibitions should show the spirit of the nation, its contribution to history, the hopes and aspirations of the people. The works of art in the two exhibitions will be complemented with items from material history of civilization. In my opinion, this will be of great interest for the Russian and American public alike," Shvydkoi said.
