The taiga is ablaze in Yakutia and the Khabarovsk territory
A fire in Yakutia has spread to more than 300 hectares, the dispatcher’s service of the regional forest protection airbase tsaid. Meanwhile, ten small fires are registered in the republic. One fire on the area of 110 hectares is still raging in the Khabarovsk territory, but it was localised. All other fires have been extinguished in the territory. Seven new fires have broken out in the region over the past day, forest protection services localised and put out most of them. More than 200 people, 11 aircraft and 25 pieces of ground machinery are involved in firefighting efforts. Settlements are out of danger. Weather still helps forest protection services fight the flames, two and a half monthly norms of precipitation fell in many districts in May. About 7,000 hectares of forests burnt down or were damaged since the beginning of the fire-prone season. This is much less than in unfavourable 2003 when 189,000 hectares of taiga had burnt down by June 13
