Sharapova has set her sights on repeating her triumph of last year at Wimbledon
Russia's Maria Sharapova has set her sights on repeating her triumph of last year at Wimbledon, the world's leading tennis tournament. "It is more difficult to defend the champion's title but now that I am 18, I have more experience than last year when I was 17," Sharapova said at a press conference on the eve of the championship at the All England Club in London. She told RIA Novosti that she hoped she could win again. Sharapova said that she felt well and confident but added that no one could know what might happen. But the defending champion did say she had a special feeling about returning to Wimbledon. Her constant team is accompanying her: her father, her coach, and her practice partner, but her mother stayed at home, in the United States, where the family now live. The tennis player will also be accompanied by her personal bodyguards. Sharapova said her mother did not watch her matches but always congratulated her when she won. When asked what she does apart from training and playing in tournaments, Sharapova said she was quite good at combining tennis with other things. In particular, she said she was finishing her studies this year, and she would soon have to take a serious exam in math. Sharapova was evasive about her personal life, saying that she had time for it too but did not want to talk about it. Journalists took a particular interest in the new outfit Sharapova had designed herself with her designers. The 18-year-old said she had always liked fashion, liked to look different and had a creative approach. But she said the outfit also had to be comfortable on court. She said she would be wearing a white-and-orange outfit with a closed top and a plisse skirt at Wimbledon. The tennis player said it would suit the weather, particularly if the British capital continued to enjoy the current heat wave. She has brought ten pairs of tennis shoes with golden insets designed especially for her. Sharapova joked that she hoped they would help her distract her opponents.
