Russia may conclude talks on its accession to the WTO before the end of 2005
Russia may conclude talks on its accession to the WTO before the end of 2005, according to the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade. The Russian delegation for the talks hopes to complete all bilateral negotiations in Geneva with a series of major countries this week, said Maxim Medvedkov, Russia's chief negotiator. Medvedkov did not rule out the possibility of completing talks before year's end, in time for the WTO ministerial conference in Hong Kong in December. "By the end of this week, we will know the schedule for further negotiations and then decide on the subsequent stages," he said. Another round of WTO talks opened in Geneva Monday and are scheduled to last through June 29. The Russian delegation will then hold bilateral talks on access to the commodity and services market with 20 countries, including the United States, Australia, Canada, Brazil, Japan and India. The working group on Russia's accession to the WTO will meet for a formal session on Friday, June 24. German Gref, minister of economic development and trade, will be reporting at the session. Multi-lateral consultations on agricultural and phytosanitary norms are scheduled for Tuesday. Medvedkov said the Russian delegates would resume talks on agricultural goods with the United States
