A senior European official on combating human trafficking will visit Russia this summer
A senior European official on combating human trafficking will visit Moscow this summer, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced today. Dr. Helga Konrad, the special representative of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe's Chairman-in-Office on combating trafficking in human beings, will be in the Russian capital from June 28 to July 1. The Russian Foreign Ministry said it would be her first official visit to Russia in this post. In 2004 and the first six months of 2005, Konrad went to 18 countries in western and southeastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States. She also visited the United States. "The forthcoming visit by the special representative to Russia is of a familiarizing nature," the ministry said. "Its objective is to gain an insight into the state of affairs in the country with regard to efforts to combat human trafficking." Konrad's work should result in the development of a united and coordinated OSCE strategy in this field. Konrad will meet with Yelena Mizulina, who represents the State Duma (the lower chamber of parliament) in the Constitutional Court, and Russia's human rights commissioner, Vladimir Lukin. The OSCE official will also hold meetings with representatives from the Foreign, Interior, Health and Social Development, and Justice ministries
