The Collective Security Treaty Organization is the most efficient body in the post-Soviet area
The Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) is the most efficient body in the post-Soviet area, said Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko, who was elected chairman of its Inter-state Council Wednesday. "The CSTO is the most efficient organization of all the organizations operating in the post-Soviet area...better than the CIS and Eurasec in terms of military cooperation and military policy," Lukashenko said following today's meeting of the CSTO Security Council in the Kremlin. "There cannot and must not be a unipolar international security system," he said. "The system of checks and balances collapsed with the breakup of the Soviet Union, and the UN has not always acted efficiently ever since." Lukashenko suggested several international organizations ensuring global security would be a more effective way to address new challenges and threats. "The CSTO is vital for addressing present day problems," Lukashenko said, adding the organization was capable of tackling major objectives. Lukashenko said in 2004 the organization aided law enforcement bodies to seize more than 5,000 metric tons of illicit drugs and uncover more than 4,000 crimes. "No country could do that alone, but joint efforts produced an impressive result," Lukashenko said. The CSTO comprises Belarus, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Armenia. Eurasec comprises the same countries except Armenia that has observer status, as does Moldova and Ukraine
