Mikhail Saakashvili presented his view of resolving the Georgia-Abkhazia conflict
Georgia President Mikhail Saakashvili presented his view of resolving the Georgia-Abkhazia conflict to a meeting of the United Nations Security Council on Thursday. He said Russia could play a very important role in a settlement of the matter, 'but has to change its approaches.' Saakashvili said: 'I hope that Vladimir Putin can do this.' He stressed that, in the wake of his four-hour meeting with Putin in Moscow, no doubt remains that 'the Georgian-Abkhazian conflict must be settled peacefully.' At the same time, Saakashvili was very critical of the de facto leadership of Abkhazia. 'We do not want war with Abkhazia, but we cannot follow a path of endless concessions. We cannot accept the existence of a territory that bars Georgians simply because they are Georgians,' he said. The Georgian president also said he is ready to review the question of granting Abkhazia wider privileges as an autonomy. Saakashvili called on the international community to take an active interest in settling the conflict and said it should act more energetically within the frameworks of the Sochi and Geneva Processes.
