Russia sends aid to the disaster-stricken southern regions of Tajikistan
Russia sends aid to the disaster-stricken southern regions of Tajikistan, Emergencies Minister Sergei Shoigu said Tuesday. "We decided to render assistance at the request of Tajik Emergencies Minister Mirzo Zieyev," Shoigu said at a meeting with Tajik President Emomali Rakhmonov. "We should help our friends." Russian First Deputy Emergencies Minister Sergei Brazhnikov said two ministry planes were ready to fly to southern Tajikistan. Shoigu and Zieyev will go to the disaster area tonight to assess the situation and determine the scale of aid Russia will send, he said. Shoigu called Tajik-Russian relations "dynamic and developing." "The Tajik president and I discussed the implementation of agreements and the signing of new documents," Shoigu said. "We considered cooperation in the spheres of energy, industry and non-ferrous metallurgy, as well as regional interaction." The sides pointed to progress in bilateral relations. "January-April turnover exceeded the rates from the first half of 2004," Shoigu said. "Russian investments in Tajikistan are growing. Russia intends to build major facilities in Tajikistan."
