The Sakhalin aborigines protesting against oil companies’ intrusion
The Sakhalin aborigines protesting against oil companies’ intrusion in their traditional environment have blocked the road leading to units of the US company Exxon Neftegaz Ltd. About one hundred Nivkhs, Evenks and Uiltas were joined by a group of environmentalists who share their view on the problem. Participants in the one-day protest demand independent investigation into a damage caused to the nature management of the aboriginal people by “Sakhalin 1” and “Sakhalin 2” projects. President of the Aborigine Scanty People of the North Association (ASPNA) of the Sakhalin Region Aleksey Limanzo insists that laying pipelines oilmen deprive the aborigines of deer pastures and drastically reduce the number of fish in local rivers
