Sergei Lavrov:"Regional conflicts need to be resolved to combat terrorism"
Regional conflicts need to be resolved to combat terrorism, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told the 32nd session of the foreign ministers of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC). "We cannot combat terrorism effectively without settling regional conflicts, which breed terrorism, and resolving serious social problems caused by uneven economic development in the world," Lavrov said. The Middle East conflict, which extremists try to present as a symbol of the conflict of civilizations, should be resolved as soon as possible, the minister said. The Middle East peace process should be based on the relevant UN resolutions, the Madrid principles and the Arab peace initiative endorsed by the 2002 summit of the League of Arab States in Beirut, Lavrov added. "Russia and its Middle East Quartet partners (the UN, EU and U.S.) will promote efforts to resolve the Palestinian problem in compliance with the roadmap [peace plan], which envisages the establishment of a viable Palestinian state living side by side in peace and security with Israel," Lavrov said. He added that the resumption of talks with Syria and Lebanon was becoming increasingly important
