Russia hopes that the presidential elections in Kyrgyzstan on July 10 will normalize the situation in the Central Asian republic
Russia hopes that the presidential elections in Kyrgyzstan on July 10 will normalize the situation in the Central Asian republic, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Tuesday. "You will soon hold presidential elections and we hope the elections will finally normalize the situation in the republic ... and a situation will emerge that will allow social problems to be solved," Putin told acting Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev. "Russia is ready to continue maintaining friendly relations with Kyrgyzstan," Putin said. According to him, Russia has tried to assist Kyrgyzstan in various spheres, including in the humanitarian field. He said trade between the two countries had grown by 35% last year. "However, we still have a lot of work in all areas of cooperation," Putin added. The acting Kyrgyz president said that preparations for the election were proceeding well and that the voting would be held in accordance with election legislation. Bakiyev also said that the situation in Kyrgyzstan was stabilizing, and thanked Putin for his support in difficult times. "I would like Russian-Kyrgyz contacts to develop faster," Bakiyev said. "Although, economic ties are becoming stronger I would like Russia's business presence in Kyrgyzstan to assume a greater scale. And we, in our turn, are ready to assist this." According to him, a number of major investors had expressed their interest in infrastructure projects in Kyrgyzstan. Putin said nothing was preventing these projects from being implemented
