Russia's Deputy Prosecutor General Vladimir Kolesnikov demanded that foreign law-enforcement bodies extradite Leonid Nevzlin
Russia's Deputy Prosecutor General Vladimir Kolesnikov demanded that foreign law-enforcement bodies extradite Leonid Nevzlin, one of the largest shareholders of the Yukos oil company, who is accused of involvement in a series of contract murders. Speaking at a news conference in the Russian capital on Friday, Kolesnikov reminded that Moscow officially requested Israel and the United States to extradite Nevzlin on June 15 and July 12, respectively. "Personally, I feel shame and regret that the rostrum of the top legislative body of this country /the USA - eds Itar-Tass/ is given to the man accused of committing the gravest offence and placed on the international wanted list," he said in comments on Nevzlin's televised speech in the United States. Earlier, Russia's Supreme Court upheld the verdict for Yukos security officer Alexei Pichugin, who had been sentenced to 20 years in prison for organizing a murder. Prosecutors later brought new charges against Pichugin, in the episodes of two murders and two assassination attempts. The indictment against Pichugin said the latter had acted on Nevzlin's order. "Just one thing seems reassuring to me: the law-enforcement system of that country /the United States/ has a different attitude /to Leonid Nevlzin - eds Itar-Tass/ than politicians. Once again I'm addressing those who are responsible for extradition issues: the criminal should appear in court and suffer the punishment he deserves," Kolesnikov said. On July 21, 2004, Leonid Nevzlin was announced a defendant in absentia, in the criminal case over a series of contract murders. He was put on the international wanted list on the same day. Moscow's Basmanny court issued an arrest warrant for Nevzlin on July 23, 2004
