The social policy committee of the Federation Council has proposed prohibiting foreigners from adopting Russian children
The social policy committee of the Federation Council, parliament's upper chamber, has proposed prohibiting foreigners from adopting Russian children, committee chairperson Valentina Petrenko said Wednesday. The committee has already asked the Prosecutor General's Office to ban foreign adoptions, she said. "Many murders of children in adoptive families, mainly in the United States, caused our decision," Petrenko said. Thirteen Russian children recently suffered from violence in foreign adoptive families, she said. The committee is drafting a number of amendments to the Family and Criminal Codes regarding adoption procedures. "We are proposing the toughening of the responsibility of adoption agencies," Petrenko said. She also said the amendments offered privileges to Russian families looking to adopt, like free medical treatment and operations for sick adopted children
