Russian and Japanese border guards have begun a joint exercise in the Sea of Japan off the port of Niigata
Two Russian and seven Japanese coast guard ships will practice cooperation in detaining intruder vessels, and rescuing ships in distress, including fire fighting measures and first aid to those injured. Two Japanese planes will be involved in the exercise. This is the first visit by Russian border guard ships to Niigata. The chief of the Primorye (Maritime Territory) border guards department, Lieutenant-General Vladimir Lakizo leads the mission. After the exercise he will meet with Japan’s Vice-Admiral Mutsuru Nishikori to review the results and draw up plans for future cooperation. The Russian ships’ visit to Niigata will last till Sunday, August 21. Russian and Japanese border guards will visit each other’s vessels and hold tug-of-war and arm wrestling competitions. The Russian border guards will be received by Niigata Prefecture’s governor. Russian and Japanese border guard services have been holding joint exercises since April 2000. This is the eighth such activity. The previous ones were held in the area of Japanese ports of Tokyo and Otaru and Russian ports of Vladivostok and Korsakov
