The explosion left a 70-cm-deep crater, which is nearly two meters in diameter. It also damaged ten-meter-long rails and cross-sleepers. The accident occurred on the 63rd kilometre of the Kurush-Kizilyurt plain track at around 23:00 Moscow time last Saturday. The train was on its way from Makhachkala to Astrakhan when the bomb went off. The locomotive and two carriages derailed. There are no casualties among the passengers or railwaymen, according to preliminary reports. The rail traffic resumed after emergency restoration work at the Kurush-Kizilyurt rail section, Tass learnt on Sunday from a duty officer of railway police of the Makhachkala division of the North Caucasian Railway. According to the duty officer, “the damaged Makhachkala-Astrakhan train with around 500 passengers departed from the Kizilyurt station for the place of destination at 08.00”.
