Some 160 Georgian soldiers headed for Iraq on Wednesday
Some 160 Georgian soldiers headed for Iraq on Wednesday, Georgia's Defense Ministry announced. The Georgian troops will perform the same duties as other forces in the coalition that unseated Saddam Hussein: guarding military bases, contending with terrorism, participating in peace-keeping operations. Another approximately 60 Georgian troops are scheduled to go to Iraq a month from now. They will be based largely in Baghdad and in Tikrit, Hussein's native city. Earlier, Georgia had sent about 100 soldiers, medical personnel and builders to Iraq. All returned home safely a month ago.
